The Office of the Auditor-General (OAG) carries out the work of the Controller and Auditor-General, along with Audit New Zealand, and private sector auditing firms. This work includes strategic audit planning, setting policy and standards, appointing auditors and overseeing their performance, carrying out performance audits, providing reporting and advice to Parliament, and carrying out inquiries and other special studies. The work of the Office of the Auditor-General gives Parliament, public entities, and the public independent assurance that public entities are operating, and accounting for their performance, in keeping with Parliament’s intentions.

About Office of the Auditor-General
Welcome to the Office of the Auditor-General, New Zealand! As an independent entity, our core functions include providing Parliament and the public with an unbiased view of how public organizations operate. We carry out annual audits of public organizations through our extensive network of auditors. Ensuring that government departments' spending is in line with what Parliament has authorized is a crucial part of our nation's democratic arrangements.
Our work doesn't stop at auditing. We also have the power to inquire into concerns regarding the use of public money, although this work is discretionary. While we can't assist with individual complaints or overturn decisions made by public organizations, we provide valuable advice and briefings to select committees to aid in their annual reviews and examination of budget estimates.
