About Mana Mokopuna
The Children and Young People's Commission NZ, also known as Mana Mokopuna, passionately advocates for the rights, interests, and wellbeing of all 1. 2 million children and young people in Aotearoa. Established in July 2023, the Commission follows a rich whakapapa of dedicated Children's Commissioners since 1989.
Led by Chief Children’s Commissioner, Judge Frances Eivers, they ensure that children's voices are heard in decision-making processes, provide advice and guidance to government authorities, and advocate for systemic changes. The Commission also monitors places where young people are detained and aims to amplify mokopuna voices in the curriculum. With a strong commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi, the Commission operates based on the principles of Aroha, Pono, Tika, and Mātauranga.
Their four priorities are Education, Mental Wellbeing, Ending Family Violence, and Monitoring Places of Detention. Together, they strive to create an Aotearoa where every child feels a sense of belonging and has what they need to live their best life
