About IOC
The Ocean Best Practices System (OBPS), initiated by the International Oceanographic Commission (IOC), aims to enhance and standardize ocean data practices to improve the collection, analysis, and sharing of critical ocean information. Established in 2019 and extended in 2025, OBPS supports various IOC programs and regional initiatives while fostering interoperability and coordination among diverse oceanic disciplines. The primary focus of the OBPS is to facilitate the entire ocean data value chain, encompassing observation, management, analysis, product generation, and service delivery.
By advocating for the development and utilization of best practices, OBPS addresses key challenges such as method transparency, data comparability, and limited training access. Furthermore, it empowers the ocean science community to tackle pressing environmental issues like climate change and biodiversity loss. The system serves as a global resource for scientists, policymakers, and stakeholders, ensuring the sustainable advancement of ocean science and enhancing the overall health of our planet
