The Ocean Literacy Project is an education and training organisation focused on helping people and institutions understand the ocean and make more informed decisions. Its mission is to make ocean literacy as essential as climate literacy by bringing ocean knowledge into communities, businesses, governments and other places where decisions are shaped. Recognised by UNESCO-IOC as part of the Ocean Literacy Blue Thread network, the Project supports the implementation of the Venice Declaration on Ocean Literacy.
Its offerings include certified ocean literacy training, executive briefings, courses, university partnerships and place-based programmes. It also works with communities, educators and organisations through workshops, pilots and international partnerships, connecting ocean science with everyday experience and local action. The Project’s approach combines science, systems thinking and applied learning to build the knowledge and confidence needed to act.
Founded by marine scientist and educator Professor Leanne Hepburn, the organisation draws on experience spanning coral reef research, community resilience and sustainability education across the Caribbean, Southeast Asia and the UK.
