The Ökologische Schutzstation Steinhuder Meer (ÖSSM) is a nonprofit nature conservation association dedicated to balancing the needs of people and nature around Steinhuder Meer. Supported by volunteers and professional staff, it works on a scientific basis and shares ecological knowledge through education. In cooperation with partners, the station aims to promote biodiversity, make nature accessible to the public, and help preserve it for future generations.

Its work includes species protection, habitat conservation, and peatland protection. Projects highlighted by the organization include propagating rare peat mosses and supporting the return of endangered tree frogs to the Meerbruchswiesen. Visitors can explore an exhibition at the station building, attend events, and learn about nature through webcams, publications, and the organization’s nature-observation blog. The ÖSSM also offers opportunities to volunteer or take part in an internship, including hands-on involvement in peatland care. Donations support its conservation work, and the organization is part of the Lower Saxony network of ecological stations.
