Ofene Jackfruit

Ofene is a Danish start-up founded in 2024 that brings dehydrated young jackfruit from East Africa to the Scandinavian food market. The company sources fruit from smallholder farmers in Kenya and Uganda, helping create an additional income stream and reduce waste from jackfruit that might otherwise over-ripen. Processing and dehydration take place locally in Uganda, producing a lightweight, shelf-stable ingredient.

Ofene’s product is 100% jackfruit, harvested before ripening for a neutral flavour and a naturally chewy, fibrous texture. It readily absorbs spices, marinades and sauces, making it suitable for a range of dishes. The jackfruit can be used alongside meat, in place of meat, or on its own; rehydration is quick and simple. Ofene presents it as a plant-based ingredient for everyday cooking and offers recipes to inspire its use.

By removing much of the fruit’s water, dehydration reduces its transport weight by about 80%, helping lower shipping emissions. Ofene also adapts its product for local tastes, with input from Danish chefs and food-sector partners, supporting more sustainable food choices and small-scale farming.
