About Ohana Communities
Ohana Communities is a Utah-based nonprofit working to create supportive neighborhoods for adults with developmental disabilities and their families. Its mission is to help adults build independence and friendships while enabling parents and loved ones to remain close and involved in daily life. Rather than offering an institutional setting, the organization is developing a pocket-neighborhood model designed around safety, connection, and mutual support.
Each planned community will include 10 to 15 single-family cottage homes, one or more group homes for residents who need additional support, and a shared gathering space. Walkable design and connections to the surrounding community are intended to help neighbors know one another and look out for each other. The model is informed by Edwards Place in Oregon, completed in 2024, which Ohana representatives visited to see a similar approach in practice.
Ohana Communities is now working to establish Utah’s first community, with site acquisition, planning, design, and fundraising underway.
