Oil Finishing

Shane Scase is a specialist gun stock finishing service based in Basildon, Essex, offering traditional oil finishing and refinishing for modern and antique firearms. Drawing on professional experience that began in 2013 as an apprentice finisher at Watson Brothers Gunmakers, Shane developed his skills in gun finishing, assembly and regulation, as well as the application of a Traditional Best London Finish.

The service uses a personally developed, two-stage oil process designed to enhance the wood’s natural colour and create a deep, durable shine. A darker oil is applied first, followed by a lighter oil that removes excess and helps the oils react within the wood. Each coat is left to harden before the next is applied. The resulting finish is intended to protect the stock, retain its sheen through use and suit different gun styles. Shane offers different levels of finish and continues to refine his formula and process. The website also promotes a gun tracking service, available through Find My Firearm, to help owners monitor a rifle or shotgun’s location in real time.
