About 隠津島神社
Okitsushima Shrine is a historic Shinto shrine in Kobata, Nihonmatsu City, Fukushima Prefecture. Founded in 769, it is dedicated to the Munakata Three Goddesses and is known as a place of prayer for peace, good fortune, wisdom, and relationships. Visitors also pray for traffic safety, health, protection from misfortune, academic success, artistic achievement, and other blessings associated with the shrine’s main sanctuary and smaller precinct shrines.
Set in a tranquil natural setting, the shrine welcomes visitors seeking a quiet moment for reflection as well as those interested in its traditions and sacred sites, including the historic three-story pagoda and the great cedar of Kobata. Its offerings include formal prayers, Shichi-Go-San visits for children, protective amulets, and commemorative shrine seals. Seasonal and community activities include summer visits, birthday prayers, the Hatamatsuri festival, and mindfulness workshops. The shrine also provides visitor information, access guidance, and lodging facilities. With more than 1,250 years of history, Okitsushima Shrine presents itself as a welcoming place to pause, reconnect, and spend time at a gentle pace.
