Oklahoma Geo Team

Oklahoma Geo Team is an education-focused organization working to expand access to geographic information systems (GIS) for students across Oklahoma. Its central aim is to help young people develop GIS tools and skills through hands-on learning and real-world research. The program prioritizes students who are minorities, economically disadvantaged, in foster care, or living in rural areas, groups the organization says may have limited opportunities to experience GIS.

Oklahoma Geo Team supports school-based Geo Teams, with established or developing programs described in Shawnee, Stonewall, and Prague. Shawnee’s team provided a model for the organization’s statewide expansion, while students at McLish Middle School formed Stonewall’s first team in 2020. The organization also invites students to register and offers a newsletter for people who want updates.

Its work has received sponsorship from Shawnee Milling Company, Dogwood Veterinary, Sierra Club, and Kirk Shelton. People can support the mission through donations via PayPal or by mailing a check to the organization in Shawnee, Oklahoma.
