Old North State Winery, founded in 2002 by Ben Webb, stands out as a unique winery in North Carolina. Born and raised in Mt. Airy, Ben Webb studied Viticulture and Enology in college. After graduating, he embarked on a mission to create exceptional North Carolina wines by planting a 10-acre vineyard on his family farm in eastern NC. The success of this endeavor led him to expand, planting an additional 18 acres in the Yadkin Valley, known for its clay loom soil and mild climate. Ben successfully grew a variety of grapes, including Cabernet Franc, Chambourcin, Riesling, Petit Manseng, and Carlos and Nobel Muscadines. Using the fruits of his labor, Ben crafted an impressive collection of award-winning wines.
As the winery grew, Ben not only focused on perfecting his wines but also on revitalizing the economy of Mt. Airy. Instead of housing the winery at the vineyard, he established it in downtown Mt. Airy, aiming to create a vibrant economic center. Today, Old North State Winery serves as a premier tourism destination in the Yadkin Valley. Housed in a historic hardware store from 1890, the winery exudes a lively atmosphere, offering wine tasting tours, delectable food, and exciting events. Visitors can explore the original features of the building, such as pressed tin ceilings and solid oak floors. The winery is open five days a week, offering tasting tours throughout the day and dining options featuring locally sourced and freshly prepared specials by renowned chef Chris Wishart.
In addition to the winery, Old North State Winery is also the home of Fish Hippie, an outdoor lifestyle brand founded by Ben and his friend Drew Denny in 2010. The brand focuses on creating classic casual clothing and outdoor wear with a modern twist. As the brand gained popularity, Ben expanded his endeavors to include Fish Hippie wines, which have been widely successful. Today, Fish Hippie products can be found in over 450 stores nationwide.
