About The Old Operating Theatre Museum & Herb Garret
The Old Operating Theatre Museum & Herb Garret (OOT) is a unique and historically significant brand that offers immersive educational experiences and conversations about medicine, health, and well-being. Housed in the roof of St Thomas' Church, which dates back to 1703, the museum showcases the oldest surviving part of St Thomas' Hospital's Southwark site. The space once served as a garret for the hospital's apothecary to dry herbs required for medicines.
In 1822, a women's operating theatre was added to the garret, creating a fascinating link between past medical practices and the present. After being forgotten for nearly 100 years, the space was rediscovered in 1956 and has since operated as an independent museum. The brand's vision is to create a world where everyone understands the importance of the history of medicine in our lives today.
With their collection and engaging exhibitions, OOT aims to inspire and encourage learning, development, and engagement in the field of medicine and healthcare
