The Richmond, Vermont Historical Society is a community-based non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the history of Richmond. Founded in 1973, the society's first major initiative was to save the Old Round Church, a National Historic Landmark, from collapse by restoring its decaying roof timbers. Since then, the society has diligently maintained the building, adding safety features such as a fire sprinkler system and handicapped ramp, and making it available for weddings and community events.
In addition to caring for the Old Round Church, the Richmond Historical Society manages a vast collection of Richmond history documents, images, and artifacts. They have published the first book-length history of Richmond and have acquired over 400 glass plate negative photos taken by photographer Joseph Bishop in the early 1900s. This historical material has been used to create multimedia programs presented at community events and schools.
The society has also contributed articles to the Burlington Free Press History Space series. The Richmond Historical Society offers free programs to the community, including a potluck supper and a holiday carol sing. They have organized various events such as gravestone restoration demonstrations and slide show presentations about the Richmond Cooperative Creamery.
To support their community programs and local history projects, the society encourages individuals to become members. Members receive an annual newsletter and advance notice of upcoming events and activities. Membership dues are $10.
00 per person or $20. 00 per family annually, or individuals can opt for a lifetime membership for $200. 00.
The Richmond Historical Society is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that relies on the support of its community to continue its important work. For more information or to become a member, visit their website or send a check to the Richmond Historical Society
