About Old South Carriage
Old South Carriage Company is a renowned brand that is committed to providing exceptional care to their team of Belgian and Percheron draft horses. These majestic animals are the heart and soul of Old South Carriage Company, and their well-being is of utmost importance. Located on their idyllic 65-acre farm called Sugah Cain on John's Island, the horses have plenty of green pastures and moss-draped live oak trees to enjoy.
The company ensures that only half of the herd works on any given day, allowing the other half to rest and graze at pasture. The horses come from Amish working farms and are bred and trained for heavy work, which is evident in their strength and endurance. Safety and comfort are paramount at Old South Carriage Company.
The horses are housed in a spacious and well-ventilated stable downtown, where they have access to rest, shade, and water between tours. The stables feature box stalls that enable the horses to lie down and rest at their leisure. After each tour, the horses receive a break, and their temperature and overall health are carefully evaluated.
The company takes pride in its meticulous attention to the horses' diet and health. The horses are fed a low starch, low sugar, high fiber grainless horse feed, along with high-quality chopped hay. Their stalls are bedded with wood shavings, ensuring a safe and comfortable environment.
Each horse undergoes regular veterinary exams, receives necessary vaccinations, worming, and dental care. Their horseshoes are carefully maintained and replaced every 4 to 6 weeks to ensure optimal performance and comfort. Old South Carriage Company strictly adheres to the City of Charleston's regulations for horse work schedules.
The horses have a maximum workday of 8 hours, 6 days a week. They receive a minimum of a 30-minute break between tours, where they can hydrate and rest in front of a water trough, while showers and high-performance fans keep them cool. Operations cease when the outside temperature reaches 95 degrees to ensure the horses' well-being.
As the horses age and reach retirement, Old South Carriage Company ensures they find loving homes with excellent care. The company connects with horse lovers who are willing to provide a comfortable retirement for these incredible animals. When you visit Old South Carriage Company, you can witness firsthand the exceptional quality of their horses, the excellent facilities, and the level of care and treatment they receive.
