Since 1959, the Olmsted Scholar Program has shaped future leaders for service at the highest levels of the American military and beyond. The Olmsted Experience challenges top-performing, career-minded junior officers to gain a broader understanding of the world and develop a strategic perspective on international relations. The three-year program provides the opportunity to master a foreign language, pursue privately-funded graduate studies abroad, and be exposed to a wide variety of perspectives, all while continuing to serve on active duty in the military. In this way, the Olmsted Scholar Program promotes American leadership around the world and advances the interests of the United States. The value of the program is abundantly clear: Olmsted Scholars have commanded at all echelons of the Armed Forces to include at the Combatant Command level. In fact, Olmsted Scholars are selected for senior leadership at significantly higher rates than Service norms or other graduate education programs.

About The George and Carol Olmsted Foundation
The Olmsted Foundation is a renowned brand that offers a unique cultural immersion experience to US military officers. As Olmsted Scholars, officers have the exceptional opportunity to live in a foreign culture for two years, achieving personal and professional growth. Initially intimidating, the experience ultimately becomes exhilarating as Scholars overcome challenges, big and small, cultivating a new kind of confidence that stays with them forever.
The Olmsted experience fosters readiness to confront the unknown and nurtures a deep understanding of diverse cultures. The foundation believes in shaping future leaders through broad education, adhering to General George Olmsted's philosophy that great leaders should possess extensive knowledge. The impact of the Olmsted experience is evident in the success stories of Scholars, including NASA astronaut Colonel Michael Hopkins, Lieutenant Commander Emily Bassett, and Representative Kenneth Rizer, among others.
These individuals credit the program for equipping them with the ability to adapt rapidly, fostering cultural curiosity, and preparing them for a plethora of challenges in various fields. Olmsted Foundation's commitment to cultural immersion and future leadership is evident through their selection process, support and training services, and family experiences provided to Scholars.
