The Commonwealth Ombudsman is an independent Australian government agency that helps people address concerns about government administration and certain private industries. Its work is free and impartial: the office investigates complaints, considers the perspectives of those involved and does not take sides. It can receive complaints about Australian Government agencies, including Services Australia, the Australian Federal Police and the National Disability Insurance Scheme, as well as matters involving immigration, detention and taxation.
Its remit also includes complaints concerning private health insurance, postal operators, private education providers and VET student loans. The office provides guidance on how to make a complaint, what to expect from the process and which organisation may be able to help. It also handles public interest disclosures, oversees aspects of law enforcement and private health industries, and monitors places of detention.
Beyond individual complaints, the Commonwealth Ombudsman publishes investigation reports, case studies, industry updates and other resources. Its work aims to help people obtain fair consideration while identifying ways to improve government services and administration
