About OpenMap Development Tanzania
OpenMap Development Tanzania (OMDTZ) is a registered NGO based in Dar es Salaam, operating across Tanzania. Since its establishment in 2017, OMDTZ has been actively involved in community mapping projects, generating map awareness, and promoting open datasets. As a strong contributor to the OpenStreetMap (OSM) platform, OMDTZ offers a map and database of geographic data that is accessible to all for free.
With a volunteer network and partnerships with various institutions, OMDTZ advocates for the use of open-source software in universities, government agencies, and other public and private institutions. The aim is to create a community that utilizes and develops freeware for social development, reducing reliance on expensive proprietary software. OMDTZ creates open datasets for different areas, such as disaster response and waste management, to provide decision-makers with maps that can address challenges faced by communities.
The organization also conducts training on the use of open data for government entities and universities. OMDTZ envisions becoming Tanzania's center for open mapping, promoting the use of open sources and data in development initiatives. Their mission is to empower youth and communities by utilizing geospatial tools and open technology to solve humanitarian and development challenges, while their vision is to leverage these tools to achieve global development goals at the local level
