Stichting ooOdrie is a Dutch foundation supporting people affected by fatal road accidents, including bereaved families and those involved in a crash. Its name reflects the themes of accident, powerlessness and misunderstanding, and its work aims to bring the people connected by a tragedy closer to understanding. The foundation was established after founder Albert Roelen’s daughter Maaike died in a traffic accident in 2019, prompting him to seek answers and human connection rather than blame.
The foundation’s work has three pillars. Through education, it raises awareness of prejudice, self-reflection and the fact that anyone may become a victim, bereaved person or involved party. Its mediation service helps bereaved families and those involved in an accident speak with one another in a supportive, thoughtful way; its initial service area is East Brabant. The foundation also supports remembrance, including developing a universal roadside memorial that can be personalized and may link through a QR code to a loved one’s story.
