OPANAL, the Agency for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in Latin America and the Caribbean, is an international organization dedicated to advancing nuclear disarmament and regional peace and security. Established in connection with the 1967 Treaty of Tlatelolco, it supports the world’s first nuclear-weapon-free zone in a densely populated region. Its 33 Member States span Latin America and the Caribbean and share a commitment to the Treaty’s goals.
OPANAL’s work includes promoting cooperation and consultation among Member States, supporting implementation of Treaty obligations, and monitoring compliance through its Control System. This system uses periodic reports from Member States and safeguards applied by the International Atomic Energy Agency to nuclear activities. The organization also coordinates with the IAEA and the wider international safeguards system, helping strengthen regional nuclear security and non-proliferation.
Through its website, OPANAL provides information about the Treaty in Spanish, English, Portuguese, and French, alongside news, upcoming events, a public library, and resources on Member States and the organization’s work.
