International Open Access Week is an annual global initiative that encourages the open sharing of knowledge to help address social issues and advance the common good. Organized by SPARC in partnership with the Open Access Week Advisory Committee, it brings together people and organizations across the international open community. Each year, the initiative sets a theme to prompt discussion, connection, and collaboration.
The 2026 theme, “The Cost of Knowledge,” explores why the costs of accessing and sharing knowledge continue to rise, who benefits, and how openness can support more equitable access. The week also offers practical ways to participate: individuals and organizations can explore resources, read related articles, recommend materials, and submit events. Activities can be as simple or ambitious as participants choose, making the initiative accessible to a wide range of communities.
The website provides information about the annual theme, event participation, past themes, profiles, and supporting materials, including graphics and logo files
