About Open Knowledge Foundation
Open Knowledge Foundation is dedicated to providing legal solutions for open data. As part of their mission to benefit the open knowledge community, they created the first-ever open data license called the Public Domain Dedication and License (PDDL) in March 2008. Open Data Commons, a project under Open Knowledge Foundation, serves as the platform for these legal tools for open data.
Open Data Commons was initially established in 2007 by Jordan Hatcher, with the aim of drafting the first 'open' database license, the Public Domain Dedication and License. The project transferred to the Open Knowledge Foundation in 2009 to ensure its long-term home and sustainability. The Open Data Commons project owes its success to the valuable contributions and suggestions received from the community during the commenting process.
