About Openfarms Lab
Openfarms Lab is an agricultural technology initiative developing an AI Extension Worker to help smallholder farmers make informed decisions, starting in Nigeria. Its central idea is farm memory: the platform is designed to retain details such as crop, variety, location, planting date, growth stage, and work completed, so guidance can reflect a farm’s history rather than start from scratch with each question. By combining this context with trusted agricultural knowledge, it aims to suggest practical next steps and flag cases where evidence is limited and a local extension worker should be consulted.
The product is being built and validated with farmers and collaborators and is not yet a fully deployed public service; no launch date has been confirmed. Design goals include mobile-first access, support for limited data and intermittent connectivity, and locally relevant crops, practices, and seasons. Voice and African-language support are planned future goals. Earlier prototype work explored ideas across the farming cycle, while possible future research areas include weather-informed advice, crop monitoring, pest and disease support, market information, and farmer–buyer links. Openfarms Lab also invites farmers, researchers, extension workers, partners, and sponsors to register interest and help shape testing and development.
