Open Mat Jiu Jitsu is a Brisbane gym offering Brazilian jiu-jitsu training in a welcoming, ego-free environment for beginners and experienced grapplers. Its approach emphasizes smart, structured learning and personal progress, aiming to make the sport engaging rather than intimidating. Classes draw on techniques and systems studied and tested from high-level practitioners, including Lachlan Giles and John Danaher. Conceptual games and live resistance help students apply skills, while workshop-style sessions and coaching let them focus on areas they want to improve.
Beginners are guided step by step through introductory classes, with clear instruction, a manageable pace, and training alongside other newcomers. The gym says participants do not need prior experience or a particular level of fitness to start, and regular workout clothes are suitable. Competitive athletes can receive tailored support to develop their performance. Open Mat Jiu Jitsu also hosts daily No Gi open mats, giving practitioners of all levels opportunities to train and practice. In addition to adult training, the gym offers classes for kids.
