OpenMS is an open-source framework and software ecosystem for computational mass spectrometry, supporting research in proteomics and metabolomics. Developed by an international community of researchers and software contributors, it provides tools for managing, analyzing, and visualizing liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry data. Its core library, OpenMS-lib, offers reusable C++ algorithms and data structures, while pyOpenMS provides Python bindings for scripting and integration into data-analysis workflows.
The platform also includes more than 200 command-line tools through the OpenMS Pipeline (TOPP), visualization utilities, and a web-app template for deploying interactive analysis tools. Researchers can use scientifically validated applications for specialized tasks, including top-down proteomics, DIA and DDA analysis, immunopeptidomics, cross-linking mass spectrometry, and nucleic acid searches. Apps can be tested online and deployed locally.
OpenMS is free, BSD-licensed, and compatible with Windows, macOS, and Linux. The organization also offers scientific and technical support, educational workshops, community events, and opportunities to contribute or form research partnerships. Its stated focus is open science, accessible software, and an inclusive community
