OpenPlaques is a community-run project that documents and promotes commemorative plaques and historical markers installed on buildings and landmarks. Its online register connects the people, places, organisations and events represented by plaques, helping visitors explore the stories behind these public memorials. Records include plaque locations, subjects, descriptions, categories and photographs contributed by the community.

Users can browse entries, search the collection, view popular plaques and discover themed selections, including walking routes such as “London Plaques – 5 Fascinating Walks. ” The site also publishes project information, media coverage and updates about plaque-related news and discoveries. OpenPlaques invites people to contribute by sharing information and photographs, and provides guidance on how its data may be used.

The project does not manufacture plaques; its role is to serve as a register and resource for existing commemorative markers. By bringing historical people and places together in an accessible online catalogue, OpenPlaques supports public interest in local history and encourages exploration of the stories commemorated in streets and landmarks
