About OpenWebSearch.eu
OpenWebSearch. eu is a brand that aims to promote Europe's independence in web search by providing a real choice to users when selecting search engines. The brand recognizes the imbalance in the search engine market, which is dominated by a few gatekeepers like Google and Microsoft, limiting the access to information as a public good.
This not only endangers democracy but also hampers the innovative potential of Europe's research landscape and economy. Through the project OpenWebSearch. eu, the brand is developing the core of a European Open Web Index (OWI) and an open and extensible European Open Web Search and Analysis Infrastructure (OWSAI) based on Europe's values, principles, legislation, and standards.
This infrastructure will contribute to Europe's sovereignty in web search and empower researchers, innovators, and businesses to tap into the web as a resource without high upfront costs. The project partners consist of 14 organizations, and the project is funded with 8. 5 million euros.
The project's ongoing activities include the development of the Open Console infrastructure for webmasters and the Filtering Pipeline for accessing useful data collected by web crawlers. The benefit of this infrastructure is not only limited to Europe's sovereignty, but it also enables future AI innovations and supports other European infrastructure initiatives.
