The Office of the Planning Regulator (OPR) is an independent organization established in 2019, following the recommendations of the Mahon Tribunal. With our main goal of ensuring that local authorities and An Bord Pleanála effectively support and implement government planning policy, we play a crucial role in the planning process in Ireland. Our services include the evaluation of statutory plans, where we assess city and county development plans, local area plans, and plan variations to ensure proper planning and sustainable development.

We provide observations and recommendations to local authorities to address any legislative and policy matters. Additionally, we conduct planning reviews and examinations to improve the systems and procedures used by local authorities and An Bord Pleanála. We also offer education, training, and research programs to increase awareness and knowledge of the planning process among elected members, staff, and stakeholders.
