Optimal Martial Arts

Optimal Martial Arts & Self Defence is a not-for-profit martial arts organisation based in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, offering training in Japanese Atemi Jujitsu and practical, everyday self-defence. Its welcoming classes are designed to help students learn, improve fitness, build confidence and make friends in a supportive environment. New students aged 10 and over are welcome, and the first session is free.

Training combines traditional Japanese jujitsu foundations with realistic applications. Students learn techniques including strikes, blocks, joint locks, throws and pressure-point methods, as well as ways to respond to weapon attacks as they progress. Classes also emphasise awareness, avoiding danger and defusing conflict, alongside physical skills. The approach uses body mechanics and an attacker’s movement rather than relying on strength.

Sessions take place on Mondays from 7:30 to 9:00 pm. The organisation provides safety matting and class equipment, and its instructors are qualified first-aiders. There are no joining fees, membership fees or contracts; students pay £5 per class. Optional gradings, training suits and additional equipment are also available.
