Orbigraphia

Orbigraphia is the cartography and illustration practice of Mikael Asikainen, a Finnish geographer and freelance map artist. Combining geographical knowledge with artistic craftsmanship, Mikael creates hand-drawn and digital maps of real and imagined places. His commissioned work includes maps for fiction, textbooks and other nonfiction, events, board games and tabletop role-playing games, as well as private projects and reproductions of historical maps. He also produces map illustrations for items such as postcards, posters, diplomas and brochures.

Orbigraphia offers consulting in fictional geography and worldbuilding, helping clients develop believable imagined settings. Topics can range from planetary systems and continents to climates, landforms, borders, transport networks, settlements and cities. Consultation may include map sketches and can support the creation of a finished, publishable map. Mikael also designs and produces foldable paper globes and planet models, including icosahedral globes sold through selected retailers. Prints are available through an online print shop. As of August 2024, Mikael is not accepting new commissions, though inquiries and questions are welcome.
