The Oregon Kelp Alliance (ORKA) is an Oregon-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit bringing together people and organizations committed to healthy kelp forest ecosystems. Its community includes commercial urchin divers, researchers, natural resource managers, tribal members, conservationists, tour operators, chefs, and other coastal stakeholders. ORKA formed in response to declining kelp forests and rising purple sea urchin populations, particularly along Oregon’s southern coast.
The alliance supports collaborative scientific research, community engagement, and experimental kelp restoration. Under a permit from the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, partners are working at five sites from Cape Lookout to Brookings to reduce urchin densities and encourage kelp regeneration. The project includes baseline surveys and monitoring of kelp, urchins, abalone, and sunflower sea stars. ORKA also works with partners on ocean chemistry monitoring, targeted urchin removal and culturing, community science, tribal engagement, and educational outreach. Through these efforts, the organization aims to improve understanding of changing kelp ecosystems and develop approaches that support their long-term health. Its work is supported by partners, grants, and community donations.
