Cognomi del mondo is an online resource for exploring the origins, meanings, histories, and worldwide distribution of surnames. Its database covers millions of surnames, drawing on information from 232 countries, and helps visitors investigate the linguistic roots and historical development of a family name. Users can search for a surname or browse names alphabetically, explore popular and recently viewed surnames, and learn about notable historical figures who shared them.

The site explains how surnames may have developed from a parent’s name, a place of origin, an occupation, a personal characteristic, or religious association. It also explores regional spread, migration patterns, and variations that emerge as names adapt to different languages and cultures. This makes the resource useful both for people curious about their family heritage and for those beginning genealogical research. Cognomi del mondo presents its content in five languages: Italian, English, Spanish, French, German, and Portuguese. The platform describes its surname information as regularly updated and combines individual name searches with accessible background on surname history and etymology.
