About Orwell Society
The Orwell Society is an independent UK registered charity, founded in 2011 to promote understanding and appreciation of George Orwell’s life, writing and ideas. It welcomes academics, students and general readers, and is not affiliated with any political party. Its work encourages research into Orwell’s literary and journalistic contributions and explores the continuing relevance of themes such as totalitarianism, freedom of speech and social justice.
The Society offers members access to events, research materials and discussions, and publishes a journal, articles, book reviews and newsletters. Its programme includes lectures and conferences with scholars, journalists and writers, as well as educational initiatives such as essay competitions, grants and awards for schools, teachers and young journalists. Members can also take part in talks, gatherings and visits to places connected with Orwell’s life and books. The Society maintains online resources, shares news and commentary through its website and social media, and provides information about the Orwell Archive and other related organisations. It also owns the Orwell statue outside BBC Broadcasting House in London.
