Østerlandsk Thehus blev grundlagt i 1889 af en dansk marinesoldat, der med fregatten Valkyrien havde deltaget i den engelske Dronning Victorias 50 års jubilæum i året 1887. Det engelske Admiralitet havde budt på en the, der gjorde så stort et indtryk på menig Søren Vilhelm Jacobsen, at han tog opskriften på blandingen med hjem til København.
