Originally starting as a small collection of rocks, the museum has grown significantly over the years. It was founded by Sir James Hector, who displayed his collected rocks and maps from the Geological Survey of Otago during the 1865 New Zealand Exhibition in Dunedin. These rocks eventually became the foundation of the museum, which found its permanent home at 419 Great King Street in 1877.
