The Otherwise Award is a prestigious recognition celebrating the rich tapestry of science fiction, fantasy, and speculative narratives that challenge and expand our understanding of gender. Founded as the Tiptree Award, it seeks to honor works that embrace an intersectional and trans-inclusive perspective, addressing themes related to race, class, disability, and more.

Each year, the Otherwise Award is presented at WisCon, the premier feminist science fiction convention, where the winner is joyfully acknowledged with a tiara, a serenade, and a $1,000 check alongside a unique piece of art. In addition to recognizing a winner, the award also curates an Honor List to celebrate a diverse range of works, including novels, poetry, film, and music.

The award also administers the Otherwise Fellowships, which provide grants to emerging creators focused on transformative narratives regarding gender. Funded through community donations and events like bakesales and charity auctions, the Otherwise Award encourages broad participation, inviting anyone to nominate works year-round at no cost.
