About OTIF
OTIF, the Intergovernmental Organisation for International Carriage by Rail, is dedicated to promoting and facilitating international rail transport. With a history dating back to 1893, it is the oldest international organisation in this sector. Now consisting of 50 Member States and 1 Associate Member, OTIF's headquarters are located in Berne, Switzerland.
For over 125 years, OTIF has been developing unified railway law to connect Europe, Asia, and Africa. Its legal tools, such as the Convention concerning International Carriage by Rail (COTIF 1999) and its seven Appendices, enable the international transport of freight, dangerous goods, and passengers by rail. Working closely with organizations like the European Union and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, OTIF provides legal and technical interoperability for international carriage by rail.
Its Secretariat and various governing and operational bodies ensure the development and implementation of international railway law. With French, German, and English as its official languages, OTIF plays a vital role in promoting efficient and safe rail transport on a global scale
