Ouderinitiatief “Thuis” is a parent-founded initiative helping young adults with intellectual disabilities build a secure, fulfilling life with greater independence. The organization works toward providing a long-term home in Uden, where residents can have their own living space while sharing communal areas and everyday life with housemates. Residents are carefully matched according to support needs and personal compatibility, with the aim of creating a warm household in which everyone feels included, valued, and safe.

Its guiding principle is “self-reliance where possible, support where needed.” Care providers encourage residents to develop their abilities and take part in decisions about their lives, while parents, relatives, friends, and other members of each resident’s network contribute practical help and companionship. The initiative supports a lifestyle that can include friendships, meaningful daytime activities or work, sports, and leisure.
