About OU Press
OU Press, the University of Oklahoma Press, has been a prominent publisher of scholarly literature for over ninety years. It was established as the first university press in the Southwest and the fourth in the western half of the country. With an initial staff of one and under the direction of Joseph A.
Brandt, the Press has since grown to a capable team of nearly thirty-five members. The Press places a strong emphasis on publishing books about the American West and Native Americans, aiming to solidify its position as a preeminent publisher in these fields. However, it also seeks to expand its program into other scholarly disciplines such as classical studies, military history, political science, and natural science.
As a university press, OU Press differs from commercial publishers in its focus on publishing work of scholarly, intellectual, or creative merit. It serves a specialized audience of scholars and researchers by producing monographs and other scholarly works. Additionally, OU Press publishes books of more general interest, including narrative history, poetry, and translated fiction.
Their publications can be found alongside bestsellers at local bookstores. OU Press is deeply committed to serving the public good by generating and disseminating knowledge. It operates as an extension of the University of Oklahoma and contributes to the broader academic landscape through collaborations with learned societies, scholarly associations, and research libraries.
By obtaining a not-for-profit status, the government recognizes and supports the critical role of university presses in advancing knowledge. Connect with OU Press to explore their extensive catalog and discover captivating scholarly works that illuminate various subjects and disciplines
