About Our Lady of the Prairie Catholic Church and School | Belle Plaine MN
Our Lady of the Prairie Catholic Church and School, located in Belle Plaine, MN, has a rich history dating back to the 19th century. When the town was founded in 1854, the nearest Catholic church was in Shakopee. However, in 1856, the first Catholic settlers, predominantly Irish, began migrating to Belle Plaine.
A priest from Shakopee would visit periodically to celebrate Mass in the homes of the Catholic residents. In 1860, the Belle Plaine Catholic Community decided to build their own church, which was named St. Martin.
Later, this church became Sacred Heart Catholic Church. In 1871, the German Catholic families in the area established their own church, Sts. Peter and Paul, which served the community for over 30 years.
A new church was built in 1905, and in 1989, the consolidated parish was renamed Our Lady of the Prairie. Today, Our Lady of the Prairie Catholic Church and School continues to welcome worshippers from diverse backgrounds. With a variety of ministries and volunteer opportunities, the church encourages active participation and spiritual growth.
