The Outland Trophy is a college football award presented by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) to recognize the nation’s best interior lineman. Established in 1946 through a contribution from Dr. John Outland, the award honors offensive and defensive interior linemen; ends are not eligible. Outland, a former All-American at the University of Pennsylvania, created the trophy to give linemen recognition for their contributions to the game. It is described as the third-oldest major college football award.
The winner is selected from three finalists named through the FWAA All-America process. The All-America Committee considers input from the association’s membership, selects a 26-player first team and identifies the finalists; committee members then choose the winner by individual ballot. The FWAA also recognizes Outland Trophy National Players of the Week during the season. Its website provides award news, a history of winners dating back to 1946, information about the selection process and opportunities to join the association. The trophy is part of the National College Football Awards Association.
