OUTLAST Project

OUTLAST is an innovative initiative focused on addressing the global challenges posed by drought, impacting water supply, agriculture, and natural ecosystems. With an emphasis on developing an operational, multi-sectoral drought hazard forecasting system, OUTLAST leverages state-of-the-art modeling from renowned academic institutions like Georg August University of Göttingen and Goethe University Frankfurt. Their primary aim is to bridge the gap between academic research and practical application for policymakers and practitioners, especially in data-scarce regions.

The project implements advanced global-scale models, such as WaterGAP and GCWM, to provide monthly drought forecasts with a focus on various regions, including the Lake Victoria Basin and West and Central Asia. By rigorously validating historical forecasts, OUTLAST not only enhances drought management strategies but also contributes to the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals, including ensuring clean water and combating climate change. Additionally, the forecasts are integrated into the HydroSOS platform, increasing the visibility of crucial research outcomes for global stakeholders.
