Outreachy is a diversity initiative of Software Freedom Conservancy that supports greater inclusion in free and open source software. It offers paid, remote internships to people from any background who face underrepresentation, systemic bias, or discrimination in the technology industry where they live. Each internship lasts three months and provides a total stipend of $7,000 USD. Projects span a range of skills and disciplines, including programming, research, user experience, documentation, graphic design, data science, marketing, user advocacy, and event planning.
Outreachy organizes internship cohorts twice a year, typically running from May to August and December to March. Applicants can explore current and past projects, follow an applicant guide, and contribute to projects during the selection process. Open source and open science communities can participate by proposing projects and mentoring interns, with guidance and resources provided by the program. Outreachy also welcomes sponsors and individual donations to help support its internships, and invites people to promote the initiative. Internships are not tied to employment opportunities at supporting organizations.
