Palio dei Ciuchi

The Palio dei Ciuchi is a traditional community event held in Asciano, in the province of Siena, on the second Sunday of September. Organized by the Associazione Contrade di Asciano APS ETS, it brings together the town’s seven contrade, or districts, for a donkey race at Stadio Marconi, where competitors complete four laps. The association presents the Palio as both a historical reenactment and a celebration of local identity, with the contrade serving as important places for community life and social connection.

Animal welfare is central to the event. Donkeys receive health checks, are cared for and welcomed into their contrade, and are protected by rules that prohibit the use of harmful devices such as spurs or the nerbo during the race. The association’s work is supported by volunteers and includes promoting the festival, preserving tradition, and encouraging social participation. Supporters can contribute to the Palio and the association’s activities through Italy’s five-per-thousand tax donation scheme.
