PANTHER is an African-led public health platform designed to help address the continent’s research needs and support rapid responses to emerging infectious diseases. Governed by a majority of African leaders, it aligns its priorities with those of public health governing bodies. Its ready-to-use model brings together established hubs and flexible mobile teams to prepare for and respond to outbreaks.
Hubs serve as strategic and operational centres, often drawing on experienced locations in endemic regions. Mobile teams extend this capacity to remote communities, support outreach to patients, and enable short-notice clinical trials. The approach is adapted to the epidemiological context, with hub locations selected pragmatically where established infrastructure can be used.
Through this network, PANTHER supports preparedness and research collaboration across Africa. Its work includes pan-African studies, such as the Africa CDC-led Mpox therapeutic study, and efforts to strengthen coordinated research responses to public health emergencies.
