About Papplewick Pumping Station
Papplewick Pumping Station is a Victorian waterworks and heritage attraction in Ravenshead, Nottinghamshire, operated by the Papplewick Pumping Station Trust. Designed in the early 1880s, it was built to supply clean water to the growing population of industrial Nottingham. Described as Britain’s only active Victorian waterworks, the station showcases historic engineering and architecture, including its original James Watt twin beam engines and Lancashire boilers.
Visitors can explore the site independently or join guided tours, including tours of the underground reservoir. On selected weekends, steam events bring the boilers and engines to life. The attraction also offers limited Experience Steam days, where participants can learn about stoking a boiler and operating a beam engine. Educational visits, static opening days, a café, gardens, a children’s play area and a miniature steam railway provide additional activities. The station and grounds are generally open on Wednesdays and Sundays from April to October, with free entry on static opening days.
