The Past and Present Society is a historical organization founded in 1952, best known for publishing Past and Present, a journal recognized for lively, stimulating scholarship. Its work is guided by the belief that history should be accessible and engaging to a broad readership, including both specialists and non-specialists. Articles are expected to be rigorously researched and to consider the wider significance of their subjects. The journal’s scope spans the world and all historical periods.
Alongside the journal, the Society publishes a book series, sponsors conferences, and appoints up to four postdoctoral fellows each year. Its website provides information about these activities, a blog featuring reflections on historical research and events, and an online journal archive. Visitors can explore current and past issues, as well as advance access articles published before the print edition. Full access to articles requires a subscription. Through its publications, events, and fellowship support, the Society fosters historical research and discussion across a wide range of topics and periods.
