Pawnee Shotokan

Pawnee Shotokan Karate Club is a small, family-owned and operated karate club in Pawnee, Illinois, about 15 miles south of Springfield. Led by owner and chief instructor Mark Selhime, a fourth-degree black belt, the club aims to pass on the training he has received while remaining open to guidance from advisers and peers. His children, Robert “RJ” Selhime, a second-degree black belt, and Emma Selhime, a first-degree black belt, serve as assistant instructors.

The club offers Shotokan karate instruction focused on training both body and mind, building self-confidence, and learning self-defense. Its small size allows instructors to work with students on a personal basis. Classes welcome a broad range of ages and abilities, with current students ranging from six years old to over 50, reflecting the club’s view that karate is for everyone.

Training takes place at the Methodist Church in Pawnee. Classes are listed for Wednesday and Sunday from 6 to 7 p.m., with additional availability by appointment or as needed.
