About Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment
NZ PCE, short for the Parliamentary Commissioner of Environment, is an independent Officer of Parliament in New Zealand with a unique role dedicated to investigating and providing advice on environmental concerns. Unlike government environmental agencies, the Commissioner's focus is on producing independent reports and offering guidance to maintain or enhance the quality of New Zealand's environment. The current Commissioner, Simon Upton, brings extensive experience and expertise to the role.
Appointed for a five-year term, he has held various ministerial portfolios and chaired the Round Table on Sustainable Development at the OECD before taking up his current position. Established under the Environment Act 1986, the role of the Commissioner was formed to reinforce New Zealand's environmental administration and provide oversight. Past Commissioners, including Helen Hughes, Dr J.
Morgan Williams, and Dr Jan Wright, have contributed significantly to the development of environmental policies. As one of the three Officers of Parliament, the NZ PCE plays a crucial role in advocating for the environment and ensuring transparency in environmental decision-making processes
