PCP

The Parent Counselor Program (PCP), operated by La Leche League of New Zealand (LLLNZ), is dedicated to supporting breastfeeding mothers through a structured, community-focused training initiative. This innovative program consists of three stages designed to enhance breastfeeding rates and reduce health inequalities in targeted communities.

The first stage entails a comprehensive 40-hour course, known as 'PCP Administrator' (PCPA) training, where health and community workers learn to deliver the PCP training. Participants gain practical skills in communication and are provided with extensive resources, including a detailed 12-module curriculum. Upon completion, they receive a three-year license to implement the program in their communities.

In stage two, these trained administrators recruit and credential mothers from the target populations to become Peer Counselors. Stage three focuses on these Peer Counselors utilizing their skills and cultural connections to provide mother-to-mother support, creating a nurturing environment for breastfeeding. The PCP is adaptable, ensuring it effectively meets the unique needs of each community.
