Pelagos Sanctuary is a vital cross-border conservation initiative founded on November 25, 1999, by France, Italy, and Monaco, aiming to ensure a favorable status for marine mammals in the Mediterranean. Effective since February 21, 2002, the Pelagos Agreement focuses on harmonizing efforts to protect cetaceans and their habitats from human-induced threats such as pollution, noise, and accidental captures.

The sanctuary is home to diverse marine life, including eight species of whales and dolphins, such as the bottlenose dolphin and the fin whale, alongside the occasionally sighted monk seal. As human activities increasingly threaten these populations, Pelagos encourages public involvement and awareness through initiatives like becoming a Pelagos Ambassador or signing the Pelagos Partnership Charter for municipalities.
